Styles of editing I offer

Asset 1.png
Everything editing

This type of editing is ideal for shorter pieces of work under 1,500 words, and it includes every type of editing listed hereafter.

Copyediting

More closely examining structure, the impact of each writing choice, clarity, phrasing, flow, etc. This type of editing goes beyond just grammar and generally requires more revision.

Fact-checking

This type of editing is just about fact-checking your essay, novel, or article to ensure that there are no factual errors before publishing.

Proofreading

Doing the very final checks and edits on written work before it is published or submitted for publishing. This type of editing is about mechanical editing and largely includes edits for sentence structure, grammar, flow, and word choice.

Developmental / substantive editing

The first step in editing a longer manuscript. This type of editing looks deeply into manuscript elements like dialogue, story development, character growth and motivation, a paper’s thesis, plot issues, and more. This is the kind of big-picture editing that dives into your raw work and begins reshaping the story or thesis.

Thought and idea development

This isn’t so much a type of editing as it is a type of editorial support. With this service, I provide a listening ear and skillful eye while you brainstorm your novel, consider the kind of writing you’d like to pursue, the characters or stories you’d like to write, etc.

General guidance

If you have a freshly finished project or manuscript, I recommend beginning with developmental editing.

If you have a finished project that’s been looked at and edited previously, line editing or proofreading may be more appropriate. I’m happy to do a phone or email consultation to discuss your project and what feels right for your work.

If you are interested in multiple types of editing, I have a bundle deal to lower the price of each service, or you can choose just one or two. Every service includes a free phone consultation, promised deadlines, written feedback and edits, and lots of encouragement!

Reach out to me for price quotes. I offer discounts for BIPOC and disabled writers as well as sex workers and those in the service industry, but if you are someone of any identity who may struggle to pay my fees, I will be happy to work with you.

Good editing is beyond what’s just on the page: It takes into consideration the writer’s mental health, their identities and challenges associated with those identities, the way they live and where and when they are able to write, and their financial situation. I want to support you in your writing journey – no matter what it looks like.

Who I edit for

- Independent adult individuals wanting feedback, editing, and criticism on their writing - Teens and young adults over the age of 15 with parental support/permission  - Businesses looking for a professional freelance editor or writer to do contract work for their business and marketing materials/website

What I edit

- Every type of manuscript: whether you’re self-publishing, traditionally publishing, or not publishing at all.  - Manuscripts of any length  - Poetry  - Flash fiction or creative non-fiction  - Short stories  - Novels and books (including children’s books and YA)  - Essays and articles  - Resumes and cover letters  - School papers (Note: I will not write papers for students, but I will teach and guide them through editing and revising their paper)  - Ad and website content  - Social media content  - Video game writing  - Plays and scripts  - Pamphlets and marketing materials  - Blogs  - Magazines  - Anything else you can think of that’s not listed here!

The kind of writing + genres that I’d love to edit:

- Raw, honest creative non-fiction that is bold and vulnerable  - Memoirs that make me feel like I know you  - Stories and non-fiction about queer identities and characters  - Stories about people of color  - Compelling novels that make me turn the page  - Poems that detail the human experience – especially ones outside of the hetero-normative experience  - Characters that are unique and memorable   - Essays about sex work  - Coming-of-age stories  - Pieces about leaving religion

But I’m open to editing many, many other genres and topics of work as well, of course! â€‹

Most editors exclusively edit novels and book-length projects.
But I’m not most editors.
